About Me

I am a mother of two and live on the Surf Coast in Victoria. I finished my Diploma in Professional Writing and Editing in 2005. I love writing for children although I write short stories and articles for adults too. I have had three books published, two are educational readers, but would love to have a trade book published. I'm working on it! We have two cats, a dog who loves running on the beach and a bunny.

Rejection Letters

I have a feeling that the more manuscripts I send out the more rejection letters I will receive. When I see that SSAE sitting in the mailbox, I pick it up with a sense of dread, knowing too well what is inside. I sit on a weathered bench seat under the tree near the mailbox, open the envelope and see the words of 'unfortunately....' But in some strange, dark and disturbing way the rejections give me at least some contact with publishers. One day I have a feeling that I will get a happy letter. It's just a matter of when. Tootle pip!

  1. Hi Kaye,
I understand all too well. Rejections I know are just part of becoming an author and the harder I try-(mail out manuscripts) the more that come back home. I was recently given a glimmer of hope and my MS stayed with a sole publisher for over 12months. Then the rejection came back amongst the Christmas cards. I was gutted. Why make me wait for 12 months? Ahhh!
You're right it's all timing. 'Just keep on swimming'..as Dory from Nemo says.

  2. Hi Renee
To wait with that sense of hope for a long time is hard. Then to be rejected feels downright deflating. I know how you felt. When I get rejected I look at my alternatives. Try to do better or give up. And each time I do this, I know I have to keep going. There is no chance of being published if I don't try to improve and work harder. And I try different things too. Like now I'm working on a historical fiction novel for middle grade. Something I never thought I'd do. And I will always think about picture books, my favourites. Deep down I know that writing is my favourite hobby, I guess I can call it that. So I have to keep going otherwise I'll end up just doing housework or take up basket weaving (which might be nice). Look forward to following your journey.
